Mission: New Horizons

There was one reason, and one reason only, why Commander Dakota wasn't gutting everyone in sight.

She had left the USS Artemis in a storm of curses and relevant hand gestures, declaring that she just didn't want to work with Marines on the same post as her. They just got under her skin... Of course, that might have had something to do with the fact that her ex-husband had been a Marine, but she didn't care what the reason was. Marines just bothered her, and she disliked the untidiness of the duty overlap, so she'd left the Artemis...

...and then was subsequently left to cool her heels on Kincardine Station while waiting for her next assignment.

Then, Dakota had finally gotten it.

Out at the ass-end of who-the-hell-knows-where.

With more Marines.

Naturally, given her inglorious departure from her last post, this fact did not thrill her. To say that it "did not thrill her" is, of course, and understatement of gross proportions. She had been on the verge of killing everyone in sight, and then destroying all of the furniture to boot. Eight centuries of life had done absolutely nothing to make her temperament any better nor her patience any more extensive. But then she processed a detail that saved everyone's lives.

She was being sent to a colony.

The heavens might as well have opened up and rained sunshine directly on her otherwise-irritable brain.

Dakota had missed being on a planet. She had joined Starfleet and went where she was pointed. Whether a starbase or a spaceship, she had served. But her heart--as black as many suggested it was--was among natural things. A holodeck was a passable substitute, but it just wasn't the same. As close to nature as they got it in sights and sounds, the smells just weren't there, and she spent most of her time in the form of an animal. Usually an Earth mountain lion. So she liked to smell the things around her.

The holodeck just wasn't the same...but this was a colony, on a planet, with real nature.

She wasted no time getting to her transport, and now, she didn't give a damn about the Marines.

=/\= The Appropriate Amount of Time Later...

Dakota stepped off the transporter pad onto Horizon Colony, and she stopped to take a deep breath of the air. It took all her self control to not just leap forward into cougar form and go racing around, but she was still a Starfleet officer and she was on duty. Cat-time would have to wait. First, she had quarters to find, personal belongings to ditch, and a new commanding officer to report into.

Maybe this wouldn't be so bad after all.
